Koto


1-go (Sugoto (beta) karin)

Basic, no-frills, utility-grade karin (quince) koto with utility-grade fittings. Beginner practice-grade model. Not suitable for performance.

3-go (Kakumaki (kuchizuno) shitan)

Superior student-grade shitan (mulberry) koto with upgraded fittings. Sound quality varies.

5-go (Uwazuno kōki)

Good-quality kiri (paulownia) koto, wood has some nice grain pattern. Good sound. Higher-quality fittings, rosewood trim, white edging on fixed bridges and kashiwaba for added attractiveness.

7-go (Kurikō ita mokume kōki tamabuchi)

Concert koto, excellent sound. Finest quality kiri (paulownia), highest-quality fittings. Hand-finished instrument - upper board is bevel-set seamlessly onto bottom board, ayasugi (herringbone) decoration carved on underside of top board.

Bass Koto

17-go (Jūshichi-gen)

Used for accompaniment or as solo instrument. Bass koto is longer and wider than standard koto, has thicker strings and larger ji (bridges), and has metal tuning pegs on upper side of head for convenient string adjustment.

21-go (Nijūgen, kurikō)

Concert instrument. Finest quality kiri (paulownia), high-quality fittings, hand-finished.
